2. ናብር

Gursha (Amharic: , “eating together”) ነጎ ሃሙሴ (neighborhood, village)፡-ጨ ኢዝ 18th century -፰(1829) Ewostatewos Abraha of Shewa ባ ጀ (by the Emperor) ጐፅ (Baht), Gondor to Welo. Gursha ስፖርት (Sports Betting in Gurasha) 1960 ኃ(championship)ዮን (year), ኡጀ (football) ጠሪ (players, teams) – ዩ(United Kingdom). The UK’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has introduced the Gaming Act of 1960. It stated that “gaming” includes all bets made on the outcome of events or contests in which people may participate.

Gursha ስፖርት has been a part of Ethiopian culture for centuries, especially among men who gather at tea houses or taverns to engage in friendly competitions.

    • In some cases, Gursha has been linked to organized crime and money laundering.
    • However, its primary function is to bring people together for entertainment and camaraderie.

The history of gambling in Ethiopia dates back centuries, with references found from the medieval Kingdoms of D’mt and Aksum to modern-day wagers on sports outcomes.

Gursha has evolved over time, adapting to changing cultural practices and societal norms. Gambling has been a part of Ethiopian culture for so long that it is difficult to separate its history from the nation’s development as a whole.

Types and variations:

  • The most common form is football (soccer), but other sports like basketball, tennis, or even lottery drawings can be found.

  • Each Gursha involves an organizer who collects bets in advance of the event.

  • Most participants engage with friends, family members, or colleagues.

Legal context: The Ethiopian government has largely left gambling laws unchanged since the introduction of the 1960 Gaming Act.

However, in recent years there have been efforts to address concerns around problem gambling and organized crime ties. A new gaming law passed by Parliament on January 28,2022 is designed to update regulations and improve oversight.
